Kumamoto is a mountainous (volcanic) region on the island of Kyushu. It is famous for its hot springs, and lush scenery. This road sign (notice the Japanese/English writing) which is near Kumamoto indicates that you are crossing the 33rd parallel, as far North from the Equator as Dallas and Baghdad. | ||

| One of our hotels in Kumamoto. This is a corporate resort for Mitsubishi employees. Kazuko's father retired from Mitsubishi after being a manager for many years, so we had the privilege of staying there. Very nice glass and marble construction. |  |
